Annual growth of 56.6% drives replacement of gasoline by biofuel
Recent data from the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP) reveal that the consumption of hydrated ethanol in Brazil increased significantly by 56.6% in May. In the accumulated period from 2024 to May, this growth was 53.9%. In contrast, the consumption of C gasoline registered a drop of 12.5% compared to the previous year, with a reduction of 7.4% since January.
According to DATAGRO, this scenario resulted in a share of ethanol consumption (hydrated anhydrous) in the total Otto cycle market in the country, which reached 45.7% in May 2024, compared to 38.8% in the previous year. This represents an increase of 6.9 percentage points. Year-to-date, on average, approximately 45.8% of gasoline consumption was replaced by ethanol in 2024, compared to an average of 39.6% in the same period in 2023. However, this number is still below the 48.1% observed in the first five months of 2019.
